About this project:
Students in the Semester in D.C. Program intern in Washington, D.C. for an entire semester. Their internships vary across sectors--from advocacy organizations and lobbying firms to Congressional offices. Students become directly involved in federal policy-making, public service and democratic engagement. The practical skills and professional networks that students acquire through their D.C. experience are transformative and propel them into productive careers.
Each year, there are students with high financial need that express interest in the Semester in D.C. Program but are hesitant to apply because they are concerned about the cost of living and potentially having an unpaid internship. Cost should never be a barrier to civic and democratic engagement. This project will ensure that the program remains feasible for students who otherwise may have concerns about the personal financial impact of living and interning in D.C., a city with a high cost of living.
