About This Project
The objects that surround us carry histories and cultural meanings that shape us as humans. For the past 25 years, UD has been an international leader in advancing our understanding of the dynamic relationship between people and the things we make. The Center for Material Culture Studies is an interdisciplinary hub that fosters research, learning and engagement with material culture. Through fellowships, courses and campuswide initiatives -- including the Emerging Scholars Symposium, the Delaware Public Humanities Institute and an annual research seminar called Thing Tank -- the Center supports innovative scholarship by faculty and graduate students.
In celebration of our 25th anniversary, we are pleased to announce the creation of the Bernie L. Herman Outstanding Graduate Student Achievement in Material Culture Studies Prize Award, which recognizes outstanding work by a UD graduate student in material culture studies. This prize is named in memory of Dr. Bernie Herman, an internationally renowned scholar, a founder of CMCS and a devoted mentor to graduate students.

Your gift will directly support support student achievement in Material Culture Studies. We anticipate awarding the prize annually to an exceptional doctoral dissertation, MA thesis or MFA portfolio that demonstrates methodological originality and scholarly rigor in material culture research.
On behalf of the Center for Material Culture Studies and its global network of faculty, students and alumni, we thank you for your generous support.
The prize is a current-use fund which will support students annually until the funds are fully expended.
