About this project:
Play is more than just fun; it builds confidence, friendships and life skills. But, traditional toys aren’t made for all bodies and abilities, and many people are left out — not by choice but by design.
A switch-adapted toy is a regular toy modified to be activated with an external switch, making it accessible for children with physical disabilities. These toys use simple modifications, like battery interrupters or wiring, to allow children to control their environment, practice motor skills and engage in joyful play.
Unfortunately, store-bought switch-adapted toys are expensive and limited. Many families don’t know where to start when seeking affordable, inclusive options. Through this project, we’re raising funds to build 50 “Make & Take” kits that include tools, materials and supplies. These kits will support future workshops hosted by Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative (DATI) at the Center for Disabilities Studies, where families can learn how to adapt toys themselves.
How your support makes a difference!
Your gift helps Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative purchase a collection of toys to be used for demonstration in the workshops, as well as the essential tools, materials and supplies necessary for adapting toys. Your support makes play accessible for children with physical disabilities and gives families the confidence to create inclusive experiences. Thank you for your support!
Gifts to the Center for Disabilities Studies will be directed to the Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative (DATI).
