Trembanis Lab: Kenchreai Underwater Project
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Beneath the waters of Greece lies Kenchreai, the ancient eastern harbor of Corinth and a crossroads of people, commerce and culture for more than two thousand years. University of Delaware students, under the leadership of Professor Art Trembanis, have the opportunity to help explore and document this remarkable submerged landscape as members of an international team of archaeologists, marine scientists, engineers and explorers.
The Kenchreai Coastal and Marine Survey combines underwater archaeology with cutting-edge ocean technology — including underwater robots, sonar, scientific diving and photogrammetry — to map the ancient harbor and reveal how people lived, traveled and adapted to a changing coastline.
This fund directly supports Professor Trambanis's lab, including student participation in the expedition, helping cover travel, field operations, equipment and other costs associated with conducting research overseas.
THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT
Your gift directly helps UD students participate in the Kenchreai Coastal and Marine Survey in Greece. Gifts help offset the real costs of field research — including student travel, housing, research equipment, diving and boating operations and other expedition expenses — making this extraordinary opportunity accessible to more students.
Every contribution, at any level, helps remove financial barriers and gives students the chance to move beyond the classroom and become active members of an international research team. Students gain hands-on experience in underwater archaeology, ocean science, robotics, sonar mapping, photogrammetry and scientific diving while helping document and preserve an important ancient maritime landscape.
Your support doesn’t just fund an expedition — it invests in the next generation of scientists, archaeologists, engineers and explorers.
