Assistive Medical Technologies

This HensGiving, be part of our story.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Assistive Medical Technologies (AMT) hosts twice-yearly mobility workshops where University of Delaware students work directly with families to design and modify ride-on cars for children with mobility limitations. During each workshop, families visit campus to meet with student volunteers and share their children's unique mobility needs, goals and interests.

Working in teams, students customize ride-on cars through physical and electronic modifications, including adaptive seating, safety supports, larger activation buttons and therapeutic features such as sit-to-stand designs that encourage physical development through play. No prior experience is required, as participating students receive the training and guidance needed to contribute.

Beyond providing customized mobility devices, these workshops raise awareness about accessibility while fostering meaningful connections between students and local families. Children and their families participate in activities while students complete the modifications, culminating in each family receiving a customized ride-on car at no cost.

By combining engineering, empathy and community engagement, AMT empowers students to make a tangible difference while expanding access to meaningful mobility opportunities for children in the local community.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT

Your gift helps Assistive Medical Technologies (AMT) provide customized mobility devices at no cost to children with mobility limitations and their families in the local community. For families facing financial or accessibility barriers, these devices offer valuable opportunities for increased mobility, independence and confidence.

Donor support also helps AMT incorporate therapeutic features that encourage physical development through play while creating opportunities for children to engage more fully with the world around them.

Beyond supporting children and families, your generosity provides University of Delaware students with meaningful hands-on learning experiences that promote disability awareness, empathy in STEM and inclusive problem-solving. Through direct collaboration with families, students gain a deeper understanding of community needs while developing practical skills and making a lasting impact.

Funds may also be used for general support of Assistive Medical Technologies at the University of Delaware.
